Clash of Standardizations

This is probably old news with all of the new formats and the convergence on the computer screen. But I was interested to see that North Korea uses PAL for domestic broadcast and runs a propaganda station in NTSC aimed at South Korea.

The story of television standards are tightly intertwined with cold war politics. France’s SECAM was significantly cheaper than PAL, but also not as good. The inexpensive format was quickly adopted by socialist countries along with some dependents of France.
